Question

Thimble & Holder
Hello, I have an antique thimble marked MKD Sterling inside.  I have been able to determine that the marking means the thimble was made by Ketcham & McDougall Co.  The thimble was kept in an antique holder with a very small fly attached to the top and the bottom is stamped Dennison Maker.  Just wondering about any info on the holder and possible value of each.  Thanks.

Answer
Hello Marybeth.
The pattern on the band of your thimble is referred to as "fluted octagon."  It is one of the most prolific band pattern found on thimbles.  This particular band pattern was first issued in the 1880s but was continuously produced over the years Ketcham and McDougall was in business (1832 - 1932).  If your thimble is completely round where you place your finger and there are no crack, dents or holes, it probably has a value of about $20-25.  If you decide to clean your thimble, please do not use any products like Tarnex as it eats the finish.  You can wash the thimble with water, mild soap and a soft bristle brush such as a toothbrush.  Many people prefer the tarnish as "patina".  Polished or tarnished, the value would be the same.  As for the thimble holder, it could be plastic, celluloid or what is referred to as "French Ivory"...really a plastic.  I would say your holder is from the 1930s-1950s and has a value of approximately $35-45 if it is in good shape - again no cracks, chips, holes, etc. Hope this helps.  Barbara
