Question

Thread Dispenser
My wife's dad used this thread dispenser in his work. Apparently, it originated in Europe, but I'm not sure of that. As depicted in the photo (i.e with top on and tightening screw as shown), the dispenser is approximately 10 inches tall.

Thanks in advance for taking your time to help!

Answer
Hello Tim.  This item is referred to as a sewing clamp or a pin cushion clamp or a vice with pincushion.  This type of sewing clamp was used in place of a "sewing bird".  The clamp would be screwed onto a table and hold fabric that was pinned to the cushion, thus acting as a "third hand".  There is much information on needlework tools.  Some good references on clamps:  Thimbles and Sewing Implements by Estelle Zalkin, The Story of Antique Needlework Tools bu Bridget McConnel and An Illustrated History of Needlwork Tools by Gay An Rogers.  Hope this helps.
