QUESTION: The sewing table is in excellent condition. It's got a front draw which can be used to store items.  Inside, on the screw/bolt it tells you where it was made however I can not read it as its too small! Is there other information you require?

ANSWER: Hello Zebbs,
How do you get to the sewing bag below?  Does the top tilt?
The wood appears to have a burl top and drawer front.

In general, these tables date to the Federal period (1775 - 1830)and were classed as the first "frivolous" furniture for women. Historians class them as being from the "Enlightenment Era" for women. The tables are generally delicate and fitted with an upper compartment or drawer for needles, pin cushions, scissors and other needlework tools. They are usually characterized by a draped fabric bag beneath to hold the work in progress.

The styling of the sewing or worktable has been a popular design and it has been reproduced for more than two centuries.

Without seeing your table in person, it would be impossible for me to say whether or not it is original or a reproduction. Perhaps you could take it to an auction house for verification?

Regards,
Irene

QUESTION: Hello Irene,
Thank you for your advice and information.  In order to get to the sewing bag, there is a small flat handle at the top of the bag.  Im not sure what you mean by the 'top tilt?'. I will try and take it to an auction. Just out of interest, if the sewing box is orignal do you know its value? or even for an replicate ?

Many thanks
Zebbs

Answer
Hello Zebbs,
Thanks for the additional information. Tilt-top = the top of the cabinet opens.
Yours seems to have a handle on the bag and I'm assuming it is used to slide the bag forward so that the draped fabric bag is accessible.
Value:  antique and all original upwards of a few thousand dollars.
Reproductions: around $200 - $300
Take your table to a reputable dealer or auction house for a full appraisal if you intend to sell it. This way you will know exactly what you have.
Regards,
Irene
