Question

Antique wicker baby st
Hi - we have a unique antique wicker baby stroller that we'd like to get more information on.  It is an upright stroller that has a retractable handle and two (2) retractable wheels.  It has wicker around the sides and back of the stroller, the seating area looks like old corduroy.  It is all original and has never been restored.  We've never seen anything like it before.  My guess is that it is from the early 1900s, but am not sure.  Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Answer
I have one of these also. They were made by the Withrow Manf Co. , F.A. Whitney and probably others as well. They were referred to as "Orole Go Baskets"  because the shape resembles the hanging nest of the oriole bird. Some designs had a hood that covered the top.Another name used was "Auto Cart" They were made at the turn of the century and were sold in some of the "high end" stores of the day like Marshall Field. They were also made in a doll size which would naturally be smaller. The cordury upholstery would be correct, that's what mine has in it but some were done in a imitation leather.
I can see you have the straps which I'm missing. It looks like the lower front edge has been damaged, as most are, and some missing wicker in other areas. I would recommend having this item restored and cleaned to protect it from further damage and from getting brittle leaving the upholstery in place. Old buggies and carriages like this are getting hard to find in good condition.Having it restored will not take away from the value because I feel that these items left alone, will continue to decay and become brittle till they fall apart or become to expensive to restore based on their value.
 Thanks for your question,
