Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Pewter Safety

Question
I am a collector of English pewter pub tankards/mugs, dating from the 1830's into the 20th century.  Are they safe to use for the occasional cold ale?

Answer
Dave, that's a good question and my answer is yes and no!I wouldn't take the chance that while using the mug would be ok, that the washing to remove all the ale might take away from the patina. The question is some people like the look of polished pewter because of the "Poor Mans Silver" look that can be obtained. Many collectors want the old aged look and the washing to remove the ale might change the look.
Bottom line, they are your items and if you want to use them, go ahead. As long as you understand the pros and cons, tilt one up for me!!
