Question

golden wood box
Hi.
I was looking through some stuff in the attic thats been in my family a long time and I found this box, a small wood box(very heavy)that looked like it had so brass work on it. I just went over it lightly and the brass didnt look like brass any more, now it looks like GOLD very shinny gold. i am enclosing an image.

I would really like to know what it is? it looks like it is 400 years old. someone told me it might be an old ring box or something along that line any guesstimate or direction would also be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance either way for you time.

Answer
Hello Gingie,
Can you please give me the dimensions on this box?  It looks like you have a lighter beside it.
Please rub your thumb lightly over the brass/gold numerous times.  Then put your thumb to your nose and smell it - brass has a very distinct odor, like brass.  Gold will have no odor.

If small, it could be a ring or thimble case or even have held the lock of a child's hair. These were all common uses in Victorian times.

Are there any markings (hallmarks) on the box?

Regards,
Irene
