Question

Oriental black and gol
I have two black and gold Oriental chairs I know very little about.  The cane looks good on them.  I have sat in them and think they are strong.  How do I care for then?  Should I allow my kids to sit in them?  And Should I spend $'s and have them looked at before allowing family to sit in then?  Any info would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Olga

Answer
This is a question I'm surprised no one has asked before. To care for your cane seats is very easy. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Once or twice a year, turn the chair upside down and lay a damp washcloth on the bottom side. This will allow the cane to absorb moisture and stay flexible. Let the seat dry naturally, away from sun or heat. You can do the same for the backs although the backs don't get the strain the seats do.This will also help the cane remain tight. This process can be used to tighten a sagging seat. It may take several attempts.Keep the chairs out of sunlight and heating vents. If you use them in the sun, just move them back when your done.
As far as the kids go, you don't say how old your kids are but small children have a tendency to kneel in chairs especially when climbing up or down. This will damage even good cane because the weave is meant to take the load over the whole seat, not in a small area.
You have some very nice chairs,
