Question
I have one of these baskets with some adornment (beads and such)
The cords holding them on is disintegrating.
Is there anything I can do?
What can I use to replace the cording?

Thanks, Eileen

Answer
Hello Eileen,
You can make a new silk cord for your basket or purchase cording from a fabric or upholstery store to restore your sewing basket.  Upholstery stores would have the best selection.  Take the basket with you when shopping for cord because you need to be sure that the cord can be threaded through the hole in the bead(s).
There are also many internet sites where you can purchase appropriate cording that would suite your basket. Again, just be sure that you know the diameter of the hole for the beads. Search for silk cording.

This website gives instructions on how to make a decorative Chinese button knot for the end of your cording:

I hope this helps.

I have been a collector of antique sewing tools and thimbles for over 30 years. I am also a dealer in this field and sell on eBay under the name -- serengeti2.
