QuestionI came upon a sculptor that's made from brass. It looks like its been buried for a very long time. Its from Cambodia. There is so much unique details and carving on it. Couldnt see any writing on it because of build up of rust and blue greenish stains.. plz i would like your opinions and expertise. Sincerely, Ram...
AnswerHello Ram,
Thank you for your query.
Although sculpture is not my forte, I do however have a small amount of knowledge when it comes to Asian art. Can you please send a photo of your sculpture so that I can perhaps be of assistance to you? You can resend the query or send a photo to me at: xtahoeviews@yahoo.com Please put a subject in the box so that I am aware the email is from you.
I have visited many locations in Asia and have seen many so called antiques, including brass made to appear old -- It is not difficult to do.
BTW --The actual removal of artifacts from Cambodia is forbidden but sadly, because of the turmoil in past years, many items have left the country.
I look forward to assisting you and will wait for a photograph(s). Please also provide any/all details about the sculpture as this help me.
Regards,
Irene

Hello Ram,
Thank you for send photographs of your sculpture. Without physically being able to view your item, it is somewhat difficult for me to give you a definitive answer but .. from all appearances I believe you have an authentic antique item.
Might I suggest the following:
1. Do not part with this piece until you know what you have. Contact numerous specialists to be sure that they all agree on the provenance, age and value of the piece.
2. Contact someone at this website
http://mekongantiques.com/Pages/About.htm
Send them photos of your object, include the dimensions and an overall condition report. If you know a bit about it, include that i.e. where you found it.
DO NOT divulge where you live! If this piece is genuine, it 'could' be worth a significant amount of money.
3. Contact Christie's Auction House, NY
Dr. Hugo K. Weihe, International Specialist Head International Director, Asian Art.

4. Contact: Nick Pitcher. Nick was formerly a director of Christie’s and ran the Oriental Department at Christie’s South Kensington from 1976 to 1990, when he left to set up his own business. He is a specialist in early Chinese pottery, bronzes and later Chinese works of art of all kinds, from porcelain to paintings. He regularly exhibits at New York’s Arts of Pacific Asia Show. You can tell Nick that Irene Schwall (USA) put you in touch with him and she is a friend of former silver and objects of virtue specialist Jeff Lovell (Christie's South Kensington, London).
Let me know what you find out - I'd be interested to know the outcome.
Regards,
Irene
