QUESTION: Dear Sir, I am trying to ID this sofa in order to do more research on it and the time period.  It was given to my father by a deceased friend.  Thank you for any guidance. I have more pictures if it will be of assistance.

ANSWER: If it's not a copy, it would be from the late 1800s Victorian sofa. Look for signs of horsehair stuffing or marks from the maker under the dustshield if it has one.Looks like walnut or mahogany. Probably not original material.
 Nice sofa.

QUESTION: Rob, thank you for your time and input.  I pulled a section of what I assume is the dustshield (black piece at the bottom) away to reveal this...Is there a certain area the maker will tend to leave their marks? Thanks again for your help.

Stuart

Answer
Look for signs of old stuffing and marks on the frame. They may be roman numerials or just a series of notches. Most of the items of this era were not marked. If you do find something, take pictures for the future and just enjoy a very nice piece of furniture.
