Question

989
My 809 is working for the most part but the payout is often off.  The 989 will not accept coins.  When manually activated by flipping the wire thing in the inside of the door The handle is still not released.  989 is a 3 coin machine and there is no step up shown when additional coins are added.  I really need a tech in the suburban New York City area.  I want to tune up all of my machines for the summer.  Please contact me if someone is willing to come by and check out my units.  Will pay for reasonable transportation and your time.

Answer
Hi Terrance,

I think we can maybe clear up the problems on your 989 by doing one thing. The Blu plugs on the back of the reel mechanism and the hopper. These are the pins that the reel mechanism use to plug into the cabinet when you side the mechanism in, and the same with the hopper, they are made of aluminum and they corrode over time, causing a hundred different problems, and one I see a lot of in this condition, is the handle staying locked after a coin is inserted. You can get those wire brushes at the auto part or hardware stores that look about the size of a large tooth brush. Use this or something else and take you time and clean each and every pin on those Blu plugs, clean and clean again. After doing this there is a very good chance that all these problems will go away. If it still doesn't step up on the additional coins, then you will need to clean the step up unit, and you may even have to take it apart to clean the nylon or metal gear shaft so it will snap back and step up cleanly, also inspect the nylon gear on this unit to see if the teeth have been wore off in a area causing it not to step up. I would do the same to the 809 also, sounds like the 809 might have a problem with the payout step up unit on the back of the hopper with the Spiro cam on it, take a good look at this hopper or payout step up unit and see if it is working properly. For both of these machines, the Bally Manual 2400 shop manual is a super manual covering both these machines in detail, and explains these step up units, lief switches and locations of these parts, what switch located where does what. If you need this manual you can get it at:

Before you do anything, clean those Blu plugs and see if things improve for you.

Thank You

Expertise

I am an expert on old coin operated machines, slot machines, trade stimulator's, jukeboxes, old arcade machines, etc. I have been identifying these for people who respond to my web site listed below, for a few years now. In almost all cases I am able to tell them about their old coin operated machines, the year, the value, and other general information about their machines. I do not know much about soda vending machines, coin banks, or scales, but I will try to help you with these if I can. Please email photo's to: jackpot7@ix.netcom.com My web site is at: http://www.coinslots.com

Experience

I bought my first slot machine, a .50 Cent Mills Black Cherry in 1969 and have been hooked from that time, I still have that Slot machine! Before that I found a open barrel full of old scraped jukebox wall boxes behind a restaurant, I wanted them all but never took a one of them. Anything that took a coin drove me nuts!
