Collectibles-General (Antiques)/genuine mahogany

Question
I recently came across a nightstand and saw a label on the bottom of the drawer. Its a mahogany association, inc piece number 226. I wanted to know if it was worth anything before I refinished it.

Answer
Hi Amanda
Nice to hear from you.
The label tells us that your table is made of real mahogany.
If it "needs" refinishing, it will increase any value the nightstand has.
I say "needs", because often furniture is only dirty and needs a refresh and not a total stripping and refinish.
So look it over well. If you feel the finish is fairly good, a cleaning with mineral spirits and fine steel wool followed by a paste waxing often does wonders.
If you are unsure how to strip a piece get back and I will send the info.
Great question

Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
