Question
i found an old "buffet"  the top layer of veneer is not glued down on the back corner and has a wave in it how do i fix this without replacing the entire layer

Answer
Hi Taimi
Nice to hear from you.
All we can do with this type of damage is glue the veneer back in place.
Use wood glue.
You will need a long bar clamp. Get this before you start the job.
Borrow one or rent one.
When we glue veneer its vital to get every bit of the underside covered with glue.
If you don't, the veneer will not stick properly.
Apply the glue under the veneer using a thin blade knife to get under all areas.
After the glue, place a piece of wax paper over the area, then a clamping block (a piece of wood a bit larger than the area being glued down), then your bar clamp. A bar clamp will extend from the clamping board to the bottom of the dresser.
Measure this height and get a bar clamp long enough.
Hope this helps
Get back if needed.

Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
