Question
rob, a friend brought me a hutch that was her grandmothers literally in pieces. it had been sitting on her front porch and the moisture had softened the glue. the top (oak) is 1 1/2" thick x 30"x 20" and it has warped approx. 3/4" corner to corner. the veneer is in good shape and the wood is solid. but how can i flatten it back out. also how do i match the stain. I've rebuilt parts and re-assembled it except the top now i also need to match the stain  on the new pieces. can you give me any advice? thanks terry

Answer
One of the ways to try and get it flat again is to place the top on the wet grass real early in the morning. Let the dampness work on the wood and as the sun rises and heats up the wood it may straighten back out. Put weight on the top [bottom]. It may take 2 or 3 trys to get it right. If you get it back close to flat, you will need to put some cleats  front to back if you have room, to keep it from trying to warp again. If all this won't work, you may have to just make a new top and veneer as close to the original as possible.
  Good Luck,
    Rob
