Question

Mystery Chair
Hi,
I just purchased these chairs and love them very much. The bottom of one of them is unraveling, and the wood finish is rubbed off in a couple of places. What would be involved in restoring them to their original beauty? Also, can you help me identify the style of these chairs? Even though they look a little "farmhouse" to me, they also look even more like some kind of modern style. I have no experience with furniture styles, so this is just a guess. I want to know from where they came, but the girl at the Salvation Army Thrift Store did not remember who donated them.

Answer
As far as the wood part of the chairs goes, you can touch up any worn places with a matching stain, then apply a clear top coat. The seats are probably Fibre Rush which is a twisted paper material. You can't apply water to this with the exception of cleaning with a damp cloth. If you have just a few strands comming apart, try gluing the ends and then apply your top cost. Aside from this, you would need to have the seats rewoven.
The style is more modern but I agree they do have a rustic look to them.

  Good Luck,
