Question
Eileen,
My wife resently bought a self storage building.  In it we have an antique leather rocker.  It has Seng Springs on it.  Patent date on springs is 1902.  The leather is dry rotted.  Is it worth reupholstering and who might you recommend talking to?  We live in Moundville, Alabama.  Sincerely,  David Ray

Answer
Hi David
Nice to hear from you.
Well in my mind the chair is certainly worth reupholstering but what you will have to pay to have it done may exceed its resale value.
If its a chair you just love and plan to keep then that same cost will be about what you would spend on a high end brand new chair.
Sell it as is if you don't want to keep it.
This chair is over 100 years old. Advertise that if you sell it. It could be someone who can do the work themselves will buy it.
I am way up in Canada and cannot recommend anyone down there to talk to, but go to several upholestry shops. Ask to see their work (they should be proud to show it).
Ask if they work on antiques (most do), and always get a quote in writing.
Good luck with this David.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
