Question
Hi,
I have 4 pecan dining room chairs that need to have the backs recaned. The only cane that seems to be availabe is ivory colored. this looks really out of place. the gentleman that did one of the chairs tried to stain it, and it looks terrible. can you suggest what to use? does anyone sell cane that is already stained?? i know that they weren't that color when my mom bought them 50 years ago.

Thank you so much for you help!!!!!!!!

Answer
Hi Susan
Nice to hear from you.
Stain will only work on cane if there is no finish on it.
Sounds like your chairs should be OK to go over with a coat of oil stain.
Try a Minwax oil stain.
Batter still and less messy would be a gel stain if you can get it in your area.
To the best of my knowledge, the cane used for caning chairs has no color applied to it.
It does come naturally in various shades of tan/ cream color.
Good Luck
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
