Question
thimble unknown
thimble unknown
I came to find a thimble that is painted with an antique sewing machine on top. The thimble is heavy and does not magnetize. It looks like a porcelain thimble but it feels like cast iron. There is a design of gold scissors and a gem in the middle. The inside is colored yellow and there is no name or stamp anywhere on this thimble. I am wondering if you have ever seen anything like this. Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hello Rosa,
Thank you for your query and for including a detailed description and photograph.
I must say however that I have never seen this thimble before.
Regardless, it is modern and I suspect that it is cast metal(heavy)and it also has a baked enamel finish on it.
I'm going to send this photo around to a few other collectors to see if they have run across this particular thimble. I will also check old catalogs to see if I can find it.
Regards,
Irene

Hello Rosa,
I have the answer to your query.  I had to solicit help from a few collector friends.
Your thimble was sold through a catalog called Gimbel & Sons and the original price (2010) was $18 plus shipping.  No maker was specified or country of origin.
I hope this helps you.
Regards,
Irene

Expertise

I have been a collector of antique sewing tools and thimbles for over 30 years. I am also a dealer in this field and sell on eBay under the name -- serengeti2. I am NOT, and I repeat NOT an expert on antique or vintage domestic household sewing machines used for everyday home sewing. I can offer help when it comes to TOY or miniature collectible sewing machines ONLY.
