Collectibles-General (Antiques)/5 drawer dresser with moth ball smell

Question
How do I get the smell out?!  I bought a 5 drawer dresser at a garage sale and just love it.  I don't, however, love the smell of moth balls.  I have tried rubbing scented soap on the inside, taking all of the drawers out and laying them in the sun, activated charcoal.  Please tell me what to do to get rid of the persistent odor.

Answer
Hi Tina
Nice to hear from you.
Fresh air and ventilation is the key to eliminating the odor.
But before you air the dresser, spray the interior surfaces with a solution of 2 parts water to 1 part white vinegar. By interior surfaces I mean all the wood that has no finish on it and not just the drawer interiors. Keep a cloth handy while spraying in case you get the solution on the finish. Won't hurt if its wiped immediately though.
The airing does not have to be outdoors. In a garage with the doors open is a great place to do this. I'd leave the dresser air in this fashion for a few days at least.
Good Luck
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
