Question
Hello, I recently purchased a Clamshell mutoscope, Are there any production figures on how many were made, or how many still exist.Do they come up for sale often? The one I purchased is in fairly good condition , it has the large marque and two reels. I payed $5700 Was that a fair price? Thanks

Answer
Hi Larry, I am currently writing a book on the history of the Mutoscope, and a LOT of information will be provided there. I think your price was fair, although the value of the reels varies widely.  The cast Mutoscopes of your style sell $4500-8500 or even higher, depending on restoration, reel, etc.  If you could help me out by responding with the serial number of your machine stamped on the front brass plate, and also if you look on the lower area or the top viewer section(near where it can separate from the base stand) on both sides should be a large letter, such as a "B" cast into the case.  If you could let me know what that is also.  This information will be included in the mutoscope database which will be in the book.  Thanks!   Larry
