Question

all 3 pieces
I would like any info you could give me on these 3 items.  First the darning egg.  Its a sterling silver darning egg.  I could find no marks on it other then the sterling and what looks like an h beside it. The handle has a profile image of a lady with a flower in her long flowing hair.  The first thimble is a size 10 with an E on the outside. Says sterling on the inside and the letter S in a shield. the second thimble has 5 letters around it E A L J? C?.  Cant tell last 2 for sure as the script is hard for me to read.  Inside this one is the words gold on tob silver on bottom andbetween them is a makers mark that looks like a rectangle box the number 8 and an anchor maybe?  Cant see it very well.  Any info you can give me on these pieces and a value would be awesome.  i got these at an auction and know nothing about them.  I baught them for scrap silver price and thaught I might have something worth more then scrap.

Answer
Hello Terry.  Your darning egg may have a value of up to $25 based on Estelle Zalkin's Handbook of Thimbles and Sewing Implements.  I cannot tell the condition from the picture, so this price is more a guide than the value of your item.  The thimble with the letter S was made by Simons Bros Co of Philadelphia, who still makes thimbles today. The thimble on the left is one of their most common patterns and, if in unused condition, could bring up to $15.  The other thimble could be made by Goldsmith Stern by your description of the mark.  It too, is a common pattern, and worth in the same range if in unused condition.  Hope this helps.  Barbara
