Question

sewing machine
Hi Irene,

I have been doing several searches to find information on my antique tin sewing machine, and most times it is your name that has poped up!! My father just recently purchased it for my for my 26th birthday. I love sewing and love the sewing machine that he bought me, it has inspired me to want to collect others. I would really like further information on it, I am more than happy to send you other pictures of it. In my searches I have found several similar models, but would like to know its origin. It does have a model number of 0936, but it does not indicate where it was made nor does it have a manufacturers stamp. You seem to know your stuff, I would love it if you could assist me further!!

Thank you,
Dalyce

Answer
Hello Dalyce,
Without actually seeing your little machine in person, I am going to stick my neck out and say that what you have is a toy sewing machine made by F.W. Muller, Berlin, Germany.  They made this model with a design called birds, berries and vine and then another with no bird. They date to pre WWII.
Friedrich Wilhelm Muller of Berlin, Ger,many established F.W. Muller Hardware Factory in 1868. A few years later he began to produce toy sewing machines. The factory closed in 1979. Thousands of toy sewing machines were produced by this company and most were exported. Most times the numbers found on these machines are not a model number but a factory or serial number.
I hope this helps and good luck with your new collection!
Regards,
Irene

Expertise

I have been a collector of antique sewing tools and thimbles for over 30 years. I am also a dealer in this field and sell on eBay under the name -- serengeti2. I am NOT, and I repeat NOT an expert on antique or vintage domestic household sewing machines used for everyday home sewing. I can offer help when it comes to TOY or miniature collectible sewing machines ONLY.
