Question

wheels
Hi Rob, recently I purchased what I believed to be an antique table.  The table was one of many items donated by an estate to a university which in turn put it up for auction.  I could not find any markings to determine age or manufacture except when I finally located the following stamped on the metal casing of the wooden wheels:  PAT DEC 05 05 MAY 29 06.  I suspect this means the wheels were made between Dec 05 1905 and May 29 1906.  I will attach a picture of the wheels, legs of the table and a metal screw which I believe is original.  Do you have any ideas as to the circa of this table.  I was considering sanding the surface of the table and giving it a new finish.  If this was a valuable antique would I be de-valuing the table by refinishing it?  Thanks for your time.  Steve

Answer
It's impossible to give any information on a table based on the wheels. They were made buy a company and sold to many furniture makers.
I would, however, advise you to go to the library and get some books on refinishing because sanding it is not the way to go. By sanding, you will remove the patina of the wood and that's what gives it the aged look.
 Good Luck,
  Rob
