Collectibles-General (Antiques)/refinishing a duncan phyfe table

Question
I have a duncan phyfe table with mahogany veneer on the table top that has been abused with a 2 inch chip in the veneer and water stains.  What is the best way to repair this, and don't know if it looses value as is or refinished. I am looking to fix it up to use not sell.
I have a wood shop so not afraid to do it right, just have not done much with antiques.
Thanks
Amy

Answer
First off you want to do the veneer repair. Start by cutting a patch that will fit in the missing area. Trim the edges of the chip area to make sure they are clean and straight. Glue and clamp the patch is place and wait a few days.Using stripper, remove the finish on the top protecting the sides and legs if you don't want to strip them. The stripping should remove your water marks also.Go ahead a finish using stain if needed and try to blend in the patch area. Once your satisfied with the color, apply a finish such as lacquer in a spray can or a wipe on poly
