Question
Sewing Box Front
Sewing Box Front
This sewing box is from my grandmother's family, originally from London, England.  The family story is that my great-grandmother was a seamstress for Queen Victoria.  There are no manufacturer markings on the box that I can find.  The inside is red satin.  A needle package inside is dated 1857.  The attached image is a front view of the box, but I have other images if you'd like me to send them.  Unfortunately, the box has suffered some water damage.  I am, however, more interested in verifying the age and story behind the box more than I am interested in ever selling it.

Answer
Hello Jennifer,
Thank you for your most interesting query.
In order for me to assist you in your research, I am going to need a lot more information.

1. The full name of your great-grandmother.
2. Additional photographs of your sewing box.  Please take photos from all sides.
3. What is the box made of?
4. What is inside of the sewing box, other than the needle packet dated 1857.
5. A photo of the needle packet -- this will aid in the research.

Please send information to me at: xtahoeviews@yahoo.com or you may use the allexperts format. Please use the subject Queen Victoria

I look forward in trying to assist you.
Regards,
Irene

Expertise

I have been a collector of antique sewing tools and thimbles for over 30 years. I am also a dealer in this field and sell on eBay under the name -- serengeti2. I am NOT, and I repeat NOT an expert on antique or vintage domestic household sewing machines used for everyday home sewing. I can offer help when it comes to TOY or miniature collectible sewing machines ONLY.
