Question
Salem thimble
Salem thimble
Hi Barbara,
I would like to know the value of this thimble and the safest way to process selling it for the best return.

It has the M_ D at the apex, with the word sterling stamped underneath.  The spacing indicates that the middle letter (I'm assuming a K) is not legible, at least to me.  There is a small 9 to the upper left of the"S" in Salem.  There are no dents or holes.

Thank-you, for your help,
Cheryl

Answer
Hello Cheryl.

Your best avenue for selling this thimble is ebay.  Since I can't really tell the condition of the thimble from your picture, I cannot provide a value.  Many things go into the value, such as if the thimble is out of round, if there are needle scratches on it, etc.  I cannot tell if the band pattern is crisp or worn from your picture, either - another element that would affect value.  However, I can tell you a KMD (Ketcham and McDougall, the maker, Salem Witch thimble similar in looks to yours, sold for $760.02 on 17 June 2010.  The "(" on your thimble indicates the size.  If you do plan to sell on ebay, you need much better pictures, and more than one, in order to get the highest price possible on this Salem Witch thimble.  Good luck with your sale.

CommentThank-you, so much, Barbara. I will see what I can do to eliminate the silver glare for better photos. Your pointers and the recent eBay sale price at least gave me a place to start.
