QUESTION: The screw and the rotating nut is frozen and will not turn.  I used heat, penetrating oil and it wouldn't budge. Went from bad to worst. Since my initial e-mail I tried brute force and broke two of the tangs off the nut portion and cracked the nut portion.

sorry you felt that my knowledge was lacking.

straight talk.  you were told what existed and did not exist.  it just isnt possible to give you a source for something that does not exist, isnt made, and will not be made.  also you were given a source for replacement types that can be adapted to your use.  ebay is not on my recommendation list.

the bottom line is this as well--you should fix what you broke and have patience to get it right instead of cannibalizing and turning the chair into a morphadite.   it is worth doing right.

hate you broke it.

you need to have it repaired, and while doing so have the welder use his torch to heat it up.  sometimes you have to use the penetrating oils for days to free things.  you want to use the original parts not replacements.

if you have to get replacements it will be tough, you will not be able to find an exact replacement so it will have to be rigged using new parts that wont work well.--have the original fixed and be careful.  the place i use is swivel chair parts .com

a replacement just like what you have does not exist.

In regards to American antique, vintage and collectible furniture I can help with wood identification, styles, age, periods, historical coatings, materials, techniques, repair, restoration, refinishing, and value. I do not study mid century and later furniture nor do I deal in lamps, and other smalls. You may ask for values and I will give you current market values, I will not give you 'feel good' values. Understand that there are many factors that contribute to market value. If you want a feel good, unrealistic number, please call a local inexperienced appraiser. It is my desire to help you and in doing so I increase my knowledge as well. For that I thank you.

I have been in the antiques furniture and restoration business and in the sales of antique furniture for 40+ years and have continued my education in the trade attending workshops and seminars by various organizations, institutions, and private collectors.
