Dear Mr. Klein:  My inquiry is concerning a child/toddler bed that was given to me.  I have no history, and have been unable to find a similar item.  The wood is stained dark brown, and it has some panels on the ends that appear "burled?".  It has a decal of a boy and girl on the headboard.  The siderails are fastened with slide type latches on inside & outside at the top, outside at the bottom, and have a flat hook on the inside at the bottom.  Porcelain casters are in the bottom of the legs, but it also has what I think look like a caster sheath of some kind on the inside of the legs.  However, if the stems are placed in the sheathes, the side rails will not go to the full 180 degree drop, but touch the floor.  These sheathes seem to made of iron, and have raised letters, TOLER, and a 2.  I would be grateful for any information you can offer, as well as any value, aesthetic or otherwise.  Cordially, Julie

sorry for the delay:
trying to locate a picture of the type of latch used on the drop sides.
as to a value; these go, in good condition, from 750-1000 but the hardware has to be right and either original or a repro of the original.

please send multiple pictures to my email as attachments to one email.

all sides, in and out, head and foot, front and back, picture of the iron caster holder, latches, and strip of wood that supports the bed slats.

what you have is a youth bed or child's bed, victorian era, about 1880/1890 in walnut and walnut burl.

i want to see how clean and complete it is before valuation.

attached a picture of a youth bed I bought a couple of years ago that is similar in form.

In regards to American antique, vintage and collectible furniture I can help with wood identification, styles, age, periods, historical coatings, materials, techniques, repair, restoration, refinishing, and value. I do not study mid century and later furniture nor do I deal in lamps, and other smalls. You may ask for values and I will give you current market values, I will not give you 'feel good' values. Understand that there are many factors that contribute to market value. If you want a feel good, unrealistic number, please call a local inexperienced appraiser. It is my desire to help you and in doing so I increase my knowledge as well. For that I thank you.

I have been in the antiques furniture and restoration business and in the sales of antique furniture for 40+ years and have continued my education in the trade attending workshops and seminars by various organizations, institutions, and private collectors.
