QUESTION: Hello - I have this Singer sewing machine and cabinet that has damage to the wood on the top surface (looks like water damage).  I am wondering what the current value of this item would be, and what it would be worth if I were to restore it.  Please also estimate the age of the piece and the approximate cost to restore.  Thank you in advance,

Kristen

ANSWER: please use the followup function and post a full view picture of the top surface.  also close of a drawer side

should be patent dates on the metal plate by the needle shaft, might be under the plate.  last date is probably around 1890-1900.

thanks

Answer
i wasnt clear before.  somewhere on the plate by the needle arm around the bobbin area probably under, there should be small patent numbers with month day and year, there would be several as usually that is how they are listed on the plate that slides out.  if there are not then that plate is probably a replacement.  it wont matter as to value but is always interesting.

only damage i see is discoloration from water.  that is not difficult to repair.  however, do not attempt to sand it away.first clean with mineral spirits, then lacquer thinner then contact me with pictures.

thanks

Expertise

In regards to American antique, vintage and collectible furniture I can help with wood identification, styles, age, periods, historical coatings, materials, techniques, repair, restoration, refinishing, and value. I do not study mid century and later furniture nor do I deal in lamps, and other smalls. robertsantiques@cox.net You may ask for values and I will give you current market values, I will not give you 'feel good' values. Understand that there are many factors that contribute to market value. If you want a feel good, unrealistic number, please call a local inexperienced appraiser. It is my desire to help you and in doing so I increase my knowledge as well. For that I thank you.

Experience

I have been in the antiques furniture and restoration business and in the sales of antique furniture for 40+ years and have continued my education in the trade attending workshops and seminars by various organizations, institutions, and private collectors.
