Question I have a bedroom set made early 1900's (mirror has Aug1918) (old/antique)and the drawers in both the dresser and vanity smell musty. They were in an antiques store basement for awhile; so I need to know what can I use safely to remove the odor? The insides are completely unfinished and I have NOT attempted to clean them with anything except to wipe them out with a water dampened cloth. April 6,'09 I had posted pics and info about these pieces and was Fred Taylor posted that the veneer is probably mahogany and the secondary wood is probably gum wood. I don't know if that makes a difference in how it is cleaned. Thank you so much for any help you can offer me.
Answer wash with one gallon of water and two ounces of clorox. not an off brand, it should be about 6% sodium hypochlorite. wash and rince all unfinished areas in drawers and--and--inside the case, back of case--all unfinished wood.
also set in sunlight, drawer and case so sun hits all unfinished surfaces..then let me know the results. It will take a while there is no quick fix.

In regards to American antique, vintage and collectible furniture I can help with wood identification, styles, age, periods, historical coatings, materials, techniques, repair, restoration, refinishing, and value. I do not study mid century and later furniture nor do I deal in lamps, and other smalls.
You may ask for values and I will give you current market values, I will not give you 'feel good' values. Understand that there are many factors that contribute to market value. If you want a feel good, unrealistic number, please call a local inexperienced appraiser.
It is my desire to help you and in doing so I increase my knowledge as well. For that I thank you.
I have been in the antiques furniture and restoration business and in the sales of antique furniture for 40+ years and have continued my education in the trade attending workshops and seminars by various organizations, institutions, and private collectors.
