Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Duluth trunk

Hi there...just purchased a trunk from a garage sale
For $15. Just inquiring about the value and how old it it

Steamer trunks
Steamer trunks
Trunks of that type with that style hardware were made from the late 1890's until the 1920's by many trunk manufacturers. It is canvas covered wood with hardwood slats. These trunks always had a lift out tray. The lettering on the side is the initials of the original owner and that was a common practice to have your initials or name painted on the side. It's nice that it has the label, which can help the value a little to some people. This is the true "steamer" style trunk that was designed to fit under the berths on the old steamships and that's how they got their name. These type trunks are antique but since they aren't too hard to find the value is usually in the range of around $50 to $100 in good, complete, unrestored condition. So you did get a good buy on the trunk.
