Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Mahogany Association Inc drop leaf coffee table

QUESTION: Hello Mr. Klein, I hope you're doing well.  I recently was given a drop leaf coffee table and found a Mahogany Association Inc sticker on the underside.  The sticker contains the number  240.  After doing a little searching online I found your website and hope you could give me a little more information about the table.    I've attached some pictures of the table, as it is still in usable condition but does show it's age.

Age of table?
Value if any?

Thank you for your time.

ANSWER: Please use the followup function and post a picture of the "mark" in the drawer. Is it a mark or label other than the Mahogany Association decal?  The number 240 has not yet been connected to a manufacturer so it would be most helpful if it is a manufacturers label!!  All the records of the Mahogany Association were lost or destroyed so we are trying to build another database matching the MA number to a manufacturer.

I have seen similar tables from the 1920s-1940s.  In old advertisements they were sold as desks and as butlers serving tables.

I will reserve my opinion on the date of manufacturer till I see the picture you referred to as the 'mark'.

as to care, use only a good quality furniture paste wax like Briwax, with no toluene, in the antique mahogany color.  Or Trewax in indian sand color.

QUESTION: There isn't a mark on the table. Only label or markings is the one sticker on bottom side. I've attached a different picture of it, its a little darker but text is easier to read.

Table would have been manufactured in the late 1920s into the 30s.  We wont know the manufacturer until we learn which manufacturer held the 240 MA number.

Did you want a retail value if so figure after cleaning and waxing a retail in shop price would be around 350-400.

thanks, hope this hleps.

In regards to American antique, vintage and collectible furniture I can help with wood identification, styles, age, periods, historical coatings, materials, techniques, repair, restoration, refinishing, and value. I do not study mid century and later furniture nor do I deal in lamps, and other smalls. You may ask for values and I will give you current market values, I will not give you 'feel good' values. Understand that there are many factors that contribute to market value. If you want a feel good, unrealistic number, please call a local inexperienced appraiser. It is my desire to help you and in doing so I increase my knowledge as well. For that I thank you.

I have been in the antiques furniture and restoration business and in the sales of antique furniture for 40+ years and have continued my education in the trade attending workshops and seminars by various organizations, institutions, and private collectors.
