Question After years of looking for a horse to restore (in my price range) I've finally
found an old Allen Herschell half and half (not my fantasy Illions, but a great
start for me)
As a lover of these animals, I'd like to restore the paint job to as close to
factory as possible, but I'm having a hard time finding any good images of
factory finish Allen Herschell pieces.
Do you have any good sources to find reference images? Most of the sources
that I have found have a lot of Coney Island and Philadelphia, but not much
on the Herschell pieces.
Thanks in advance for the help,
Jennifer
Answer It's difficult to find antique carousel figures still in original paint. Especially Allen Herschell figures, because all but a couple of his machines were traveling carousels that operated at rides and fairs. Since paint on the horses sustained so much damage from continually moving them, they were repainted very often.
Just go with a color scheme that's pleasing to your eye. That's what the painters in the factory did!
