Question

Diningroom Document
I am selling a diningroom set and was wondering if I should advertise it as an antique or not.It was made by the Northern Furniture Company in 1929. It has 6 chairs (stuffed with horse hair they say!), 6 foot table with 4 one foot leafs, and a buffet. It is in very good condition . Attached are two documents I found in the drawer of the buffet.

Answer
Hi Joe
Nice to hear from you.
Absolutely advertise this as an antique.
The set is close to 80 years old.
While some define an antique as over 100 years old, to me and most people, an 80 year old dining set is antique.
You will not be misrepresenting the set in any way.
Ever toured the local "antique" stores?
You see furniture from the 40"s and 50's advertised as antique when it should be called collectable.
Hope this helps
Good Luck and great question.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
