Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Duncan Fife sofa

Question
I have my grandmother's Duncan Fife sofa, at least 75 years old, with royal blue velvet upholstery. I don't want to sell, but want to preserve it to be used in my home.  Structurally excellent. Upholstery in great shape. My husband suggests reupholstering. I think I should just slip-cover it.  What do you think?  Would it retain it's value if I keep the original upholstery on it?

Answer
Hi Rebecca
Nice to hear from you.
Sorry for the delay in answering, but my PC was down.
While your sofa is not actually a true antique, it is old, and sounds lovely.
I guess the question is..can you live with the current upholestry?
As far as retaining its value if its changed, that will not be an issue provided its done by a qualified person.
So whichever way you choose is fine.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
