Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Duncan Phife couch

Question
I recently re-acquired a Duncan Phife couch from my ex that needs to be reworked, including new springs.  Between the fabric and the cost of the upholsterer, it looks like it will cost me approximately $900-1000 dollars to restore it.  The couch was reupholstered 20 years ago and I was told it was from the late Victorian/early Duncan Phife era and preceded the turn of the century. I only spent $400 then (the frame and springs were fine at the time).  Should I invest the $1000 now?  Also, can you direct me to someone or someplace where I can determine its value?
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Judy
Nice to hear from you.
Judy the $900 to $1000 sounds a very reasonable price to have this couch re done and the springs fixed but I guess the determining factor will be can you afford it and do you really love the couch.
Often times its difficult to make these old couches fit with the rest of our decor.
And its value will probably not exceed your investment but a good place to look at what such couches sell for is ebay.
Hope this helps
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
