Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Duncan Phyfe

Question
Eileen - I have a "bureau" / "dresser" I don't know what to call it.  It belongs as a sideboard in a dining room, with baise covered drawers and side opening hatches under drawers.  I have been told it's a genuine Duncan Phyfe.  I would like to sell it.  A dog scratched one of its feet, it's lost little chips of veneer here and there, which I've been told not to touch and let an expert do.  How can I find an antique dealer in the Austin, TX area who will be fair w me as to a) genuine, b) cost of repair.  I don't know of any antique dealers in these parts.  Do you?  Thanks, Nicky Hartzell

Answer
Hi Nicky
Nice to hear from you.
I am way up in Canada Nicky and would have no idea where to look down there but a google search may find what you want.
Also be advised that the damage you describe must fixed by a pro, and this is costly.
The damage will result in a lower selling price too.
You do not indicate how old this piece is, and I do not want to be negative here but in this condition it will not be worth a great deal I fear.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
