Question
I have a small table.  About 14" High.  11x11" square.  It had a multicolor finish on it.  Dark brown and orange.  When I stripped the finish, there was a plaster type under the top color.  I believe this is the original finish.  The mfg. is King Furniture Co., Inc.  Leaksville, N.C.

Question:  I believe this to be an antique.  Maybe from the 40's.  Anyway, is this furniture company still around and what kind of finish could that have been?

Just curious.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Laurie Warren

Answer
Hi Laurie
Nice to hear from you.
Laurie I believe you have already removed the original finish off your table.
The plaster was always applied, and then the finish was applied over that.
I believe the multicolor finish you removed was actually "false graining".
With regards to the furniture maker Laurie, this is the only reference I could find of the Company in Leaksville.

It was from a 1926 paper as follows...
"King Furniture Company, owned by W.F. and J.F. King, has opened temporarily in the woodworking shop of Leaksville Lumber Company and begun producing sample pieces of furniture".
Hope this helps.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
