Question
I HAVE TWO GOOSE NECK ROCKERS THAT MY HUSBANDS GRANDMOTHER HAD.  I THINK YOU PROBABLY KNOW WHAT THESE ARE.  ONE IS COVERED IN CLOTH UPHOLSTERY AND THE OTHER IS PLASTIC OR LEATHER?  I WAS JUST WONDERING ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THESE ROCKERS AND THEIR APPROXIMATE VALUE.  BOTH ARE IN GOOD SHAPE.

Answer
Kay - Gooseneck or swan arm rockers have been popular in one form or another since the early 1800s. However, most of theones that survive today were made in the late 19th century and durning the Depression era. I have a Depression version in solid mahogany.
Unfortunately there is no intrinsic value in a gooseneck style rocker just as there is no intrinsic value in a Boston rocker, a Salem rocker, a slipper rocker or a platform rocker. As always value is a function of rarity, quality, condition and age. If you can send me photos of the rockers I will be happy to do some research. Send photos as .jpg files to me at fmtaylor@aol.com. If you can send photos please attach a copy of your original question so I can match them up. I get a great many "orphan" photos each month without a clue of where they belong. Thanks for writing.
