Question
I have a silver thimble that says "LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT," and has GW in large initials.  I'm thinking it stands for George Washington.  It is rather large and heavy, but has not other identifying marks.  Any idea of it's origin and/or value?

Answer
Hello Richard.  It would be much easier for me to answer your question if you could send me a picture.  bacchino@twcny.rr.com  Lacking that, can you provide any more information, such as:  it is marked as sterling silver or does it just LOOK like silver; does it stick to a magnet; are there any maker's marks.  I can tell you, this sounds very much like a thimble that was offered just a few years ago and it was made from a replica of a clothing button that George Washington wore.  The buttons were made for historical re-enactment groups.  The thimbles sold for less than $20.  I do have documentation to that affect that I would be happy to share, if you can contact me direct.  If you are able to send me a picture, please do so and I'll see if I can tell you anything else.   Barbara
