Question
I purchased a table at Estate Sale the is approx. 36" wide, 12" deep and 36" high. The label in the table says "H.P.Robertson Co." Jamestown,New York. The table has support pieces across the lower part of the table which are broken. The wooden pegs have broken off in the table, and one piece has splintered off the the cross piece. My question is: Without asking for an appraisal, I didn't know if I should ask for professional help to restore the broken piece or is the table not valuable enough to worry about it. Thanks, Linda Sparks, Fort Oglethorpe,Ga.

Answer
Hi Linda
Nice to hear from you.
First off you must like the table if you purchased it..right? And the table in this condition will not be worth much so if you want it usuable it must be fixed.
This sounds like an easy fix and I cannot imagine it would cost a lot to do.
You should not need a professional restrorer for this.
Any good wood shop should be able to do a job like this.
Always get a quote and ask to see examples of their work.
Hope this helps
Kindest Regards

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
