Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Info books

Question
Hi  Eileen.
Can you recommend any books on the subject of older furniture (I call it classic:) ) that deal with characteristics, types of wood... the nitty gritty, rather than what's it worth and where do I find it.
I am in Canada, and would really like a tome on things I am likely to find here, rather than works on exquisite pieces found in the southern US.
Thanks for your time.
Roger

Answer
Hi Roger
Nice to hear from a fellow Canadian.
I know just what you mean about all the books out there.
And we do want to know about our own furniture don't we?
I am going to recommend any books by Elizabeth Ingolfsrud.
This woman has an absolute wealth of info in her books.
I believe I have 4 of hers now.
She deals with every type of Canadian furniture, the woods, finishes, styles etc. Lots of pictures too.
Another name I have to mention is Grotz. Both father and son have books. While they are Americans, I have to mention them because there books are superb.
I have about 6 of their books.
Hope this helps
Regards Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
