Question

Jamestown Table Chatea
Hi.  I have a dining room set from this company.  The set included an oval table with two leafs, six chairs (one with arms), a china cabinet, and a buffet (sideboard.)  There is a stamp inside one of the drawers and it reads "Chateau Provincial, Jamestown Table Company.).  This set was originally purchased by a family friend in 1954, and has been passed to four other families before FINALLY coming to me.  My sister-in-law painted the table top with some sort of varnish, ruining the patina of the cherry wood.  What can I use to remove this (safely) and restore the natural look of the wood?  Thank You.

Answer
Hi Jennie
Nice to hear from you.
Well from the picture, it looks like she applied stain as well as varnish, or one of those colored varnish products.
The color on the table top is different than the rest.
The only one way to correct this is by completely stripping off the finish, staining to match the other pieces, and a new finish applied.
Jennie if you never attempted this work before, your lovely dining room table top is not the place to start.
Of all our furniture, table tops must be done perfectly.
Thats because its the biggest area of wood, and mistakes stick out terribly..as you know LOL.
I suspect the set has been laquered, and laquering is no job to do in the home. It must be sprayed by a pro.
And by the look of your home, you want the table to look nice too.
This is not a big job for a pro, nor would the cost be extreme. But shop around. I feel the set merits this.
Good luck, great picture and great question.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
