Question
How do you know if you have an original Jenny Lind Crib? We came across a crib and cradle.
Thank you Cindy

Answer
Hi Cindy
Nice to hear from you.
You will have to get someone who knows old furniture to look at your crib, but to the best of my knowledge, Jenny Lind beds are a style of beds named after the famous singer and she had no hand in the making of them.
She was born in 1820 and died in 1887.
I think any type of bed that has spindles is often referred to as a Jenny Lind.
In fact a fruit, a cake a soup and a train were also named after her and probably a lot more.
I have certainly seen a few old cribs in my day, and they are very different in size from todays.
In fact most old ones I have come across are about 1/3 the size of todays. And the bars are much farther apart than todays. I suspect the ones I have came across were no older than about 1930, but I have no knowledge of when cribs came into use after cradles and baskets.
And now you have me wondering..LOL
If I can find an answer to that I will get back to you.
Kindest Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
