Question
We purchased a used set of L. Hitchcock chairs - black and a
matching table in medium maple color.  We wish redo these or at least match the black paint and then lacquer.  Can we get
paint to match?  What about your suggestion for a lacquer or
other finish?

Answer
Hi Mary
Nice to hear from You
This should be a fairly easy job Mary.
I would suggest painting the table black to match the chairs.
I would not get too hung up about trying to exactly duplicate the finish that is on the chairs.
While you could certainly have the table sent out to be lacquered in black, it would be costly.
I would simply paint the table black after a good clean and a bit of sanding.
No primer should be necessary with black, unless you can get black primer.
Then I would use water based paint. A good quality paint of course.
Hope this helps and thanks for a great question.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
