Question
I have a cedar chest that after calling to get the lock replacement from a recall I asked for the year and she said it was manufactured Oct 1 1948.
I am getting ready for a large sale and have 2 scratches on the lid that are about 5 inches long caused my my dogs nails. I would like to have this in as mint of condition as possible. Could you tell me the best way to repair these 2 scratches, please?
Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Donna
Nice to hear from you.
Short of a refinish or reamalgamation of the finish, this type of repair is tricky and never fully satisfactory, but try this.
First rub a bit of Minwax stain over the scratches with a rag. Use a color that is close to the chest color, but it does not have to be exact.
Then some oil or wax over the entire surface.
Hope this helps

Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
