Question
I have older model chest given to me. It has a strong musty odor to it.  I've tried just airing it out. That did not work. Should I lightly sand the interior to bring out the cedar? I'm afraid to make a mistake and hurt the chest. Any help would be appreciated. thank you.

Answer
Hi Linda
Nice to hear from you.
How well I know this smell.
First I would wipe the interior with a mild bleach solution.
Just your normal household kind.
About 1/2 cup in a scrub pail.
Leave the lid open and dry very well.
Then the sanding which is standard procedure for restoring the cedar smell.
Then place a few of those fabric softener sheets inside for a while.
This should solve the problem.
Good Luck and great question
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
