Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Lawyer's Cabinets

Question
I have six old lawyer's cabinets that came in the garage of a house I just bought. I read that you don't do appraisals, but I was wondering if you could tell me whether or not something like these are desirable. They are about three feet wide x two feet deep x one and a half feet tall with sliding glass doors that first open up then slide back out of the way. Any information you can give me would be helpful. Thanks for your time. Hilary

Answer
Sorry Hilary, I missed part of your question ...
You wanted to know how much the work will cost.
I figured 8 hours @ $20.00 plus any materials.
I have some thin antique wood which will replace the backs, so I am thinking it will be about a $180.00 in total. You say your cabinets are wall mounted, and I have never come across these so cannot comment on that.
Regards Again :-)

Hi again Hilary
The lawyers cabinets my neighbour brought me to repair were as follows..The backs need to be replaced, the varnish finish has bubbled in spots from direct sunlight, the metal binding needs repair.
Possibly about 8 hours work for me.
Hope yours are in good shape.
Regards Eileen
Hi Hilary
Nice to hear from you.
Oh my gosh..this is really a coincidence.
Today my neighbour brought over a set of these lawers cabinets for me to repair. They are made of oak, which I bet yours are.
Hers are a base, two sections with glass doors that slide back, and a top.
I have seen these cabinets on rare occassions, but this was my first hands on...so to speak.
NOW..get this....she just paid $600.00 for this set....and she will pay me to repair it. (I live in Canada)
So to answer your question Hilary, yes these cabinets are very desirable...hold on to them.
Regards
Eileen

Expertise

I can answer most questions about the repairing and refinishing of all your old furniture items (the things we call antiques). I can also give you advice on what wood items to choose and what wood items to avoid at auctions, flea markets etc. I DO NOT give appraisals on antiques as this is not my field of expertise.

Experience

I have been repairing, refinishing and of course buying old furniture for the past 30 years. On any given weekend I can be found at auction sales or flea markets searching out a good buy. I have taken several courses in this area over the years, but I find "Hands On" learning to be the best teacher. I can help you avoid the pitfalls and problems of this wonderful rewarding craft.
