Question
Hi Rodger.
I collect coins , knives, and various cards. I always love to go into shops and look at old lamps, chairs, vintage replica gas pumps, art, reverse painted lamps, etc. I have often thought how nice it would be to learn prices on all of these items and barter, trade, and sell them professionally.
I love to travel also. How would a beginner such as I get training or educated in how to buy, sell, and trade antiques and older items, where I could eventually enjoy it as a full or part time time profession? Are there any ways I could travel to shows and be paid by someone for manning an exhibit or show in a large city or convention? Any ways yo learn and get paid at the same time?
Thanks for any information.

Answer
Hi Mike,
Interesting question, I can only tell you that books are about the best way to learn. There are so many fields in this hobby and it takes years to know what each item is and it's value and you still have to look items up as to there current value. My hobby, coin operated games, has be buying tons of books to stay current with value and new information. I could only guess as to how much money I spend on research books and price guides. As to how to make money while learning, I could only say to try to make friends with someone near you that is into items that you are interested in. The internet has tons of sites on just antique slot machines, some with information about them; the library has some books on this also. There are also shows around the world dealing in just my hobby, two shows a year in Chicago, one in California and other places. There is also a magazine called GameRoom on these types of things. Try gameroom.com. Hope this helps you. If you would like to know some internet sites drop me an email at; jackpot7@ix.netcom.com and I'll send you some links.
Thank You

Expertise

I am an expert on old coin operated machines, slot machines, trade stimulator's, jukeboxes, old arcade machines, etc. I have been identifying these for people who respond to my web site listed below, for a few years now. In almost all cases I am able to tell them about their old coin operated machines, the year, the value, and other general information about their machines. I do not know much about soda vending machines, coin banks, or scales, but I will try to help you with these if I can. Please email photo's to: jackpot7@ix.netcom.com My web site is at: http://www.coinslots.com

Experience

I bought my first slot machine, a .50 Cent Mills Black Cherry in 1969 and have been hooked from that time, I still have that Slot machine! Before that I found a open barrel full of old scraped jukebox wall boxes behind a restaurant, I wanted them all but never took a one of them. Anything that took a coin drove me nuts!
