Collectibles-General (Antiques)/Mills Slot Machine

Question
Hello,
I have a slot machine from the Mill Novelty Company.  I'm not sure of a year or model name, but it has cherries on the front of it and the jackpot is achieved by pulling three "bell-fruit gum" labels that say "copyright 1910".  The machine is in not great condition, as it has been in my family for as long as I can remember and has always been used.  Can you give me an idea of if this itme is fairly common, or actually worth anything?
Thanks so much for your help!

Answer
Unfortunately, I need more information. All Mills slot machines that were made between 1910 and 1960 all say "Copyright 1910" on the reel strips.

Your machine might be worth as little as a few hundred dollars or $20,000 (or more) depending on the model.

Obviously, the $20K models are very rare and so the odds of you having one are unlikely, but you never know.

A common machine that you might have is a Mills Poinsettia machine. Other common machines are "Bursting Cherry", "Castle Front", "High Top", "Bonus", "Black Cherry", "Golden Falls", and "Futurity". There is probably a 90% chance that you have one of these machines.

You might want to go to http://www.AntiqueSlotMachinePriceGuide.com and do a search on Mills machines using the models I mentioned above. This site has tons of photos and you can get a lot of free information. To get detailed price information you will need to subscribe though.

This site can also hook you up with collectors who are looking for machines.

Expertise

My expertise is in the area of antique slot machines. Specifically pre 1940 era machines. I have an extensive price history list of slot machines that have been sold on eBay and other auction houses (e.g., Victoria Casino Auctions, Rich Penn Auctions, etc.). PLEASE, do not send questions about anything that is not coin-op related. I have no expertise in other items and cannot help you.

Experience

1. I run a discussion forum on coin operated devices (http://www.coinopcollectorforum.com) 2. I maintain a web site which tracks price trends for antique slot machines (www.AntiqueSlotMachinePriceGuide.com) 3. I published an 8 hour video tape on how to properly restore a Mills slot machine back in the 1990s 4. I published a book (Coin Op On CD) which was distibuted on a CD. This CD had many articles and thousands of photos of antique coin operated devices. It also had many videos of rare and unusual coin operated devices. This CD has since been published on the web (http://www.ibuyoldslots.com/COCD/) 5. I have written articles on how to identify fake/reproduction slot machines.
